Did you know that swing of your arms during normal walking may be indicative of how well your brain is working? At ChiroPro, as part of our physical and neurological evaluation, one’s walking gait is assessed. There are many things to observe in a patient’s gait, but one factor of particular importance is the patient’s arm swing. Gait may be further assessed with dual tasking which may yield more valuable information about the patient. Dual tasking is when the patient is asked to do a mental task, such as counting backwards from 100 by 7’s while walking. If a patient’s arm swing changes during dual tasking, that gives the team at ChiroPro even more information about the state of that patient’s brain. Changes may be seen in arm swing with conditions such as movement disorders as well as from mTBI’s / concussions.
Below is an excerpt from the article that was first published in ScienceDaily.
“Irregular arm swings while walking could be an early sign of Parkinson’s disease, according to neurologists who believe early detection may help physicians apply treatments to slow further brain cell damage until strategies to slow disease progression are available.”
